The bus carrying 44 people, among them children, from Portalegre to the tourist site of Santa Maria da Feria in the north of the country, careered off a rain soaked road and down a steep slope near the town of Serta.

The dead included five women and six men all aged between 50 and 70 years-old, authorities confirmed, but their identities have not been made public.
A spokesman from Portugal's National Civil Protection authority said all the occupants of the bus were Portuguese citizens.
Video footage showed rescue teams battling to free passengers trapped within the bus, after it ploughed through a metal barrier at the side of the road at around 8.45 Sunday morning.
Officials said it was too soon to establish what may have caused the accident but said the area had been hit by torrential rain overnight.
